Background

Alcar Ruote, part of a multinational based in Austria, designs, produces, and distributes steel wheels for the automotive aftermarket, manufacturing about 1.5 million wheels per year.

In 2017, Alcar knew they needed an advanced planning system to maintain their Swiss quality benchmark.

The company wanted to move from on-premises applications to the cloud to gain real-time data to respond quickly when a new car hits the market, to evaluate business systems, and to correct any problems. The company’s top priority was to build more flexible and effective planning and order management processes. They wanted increased traceability to accelerate automation processes and react in real-time to any deviations from the standards for its factory machinery.

The project involved the implementation of a cloud-based ERP system with end-to-end planning, procurement, manufacturing and distribution capabilities to enhance visibility across these core functions. The implementation also included using IoT data to provide a packaged IT/OT environment to further improve the business processes and provide connected experiences. The main objectives of the implementation were to automate order-to-fill processes (for customer experience gain) and boost productivity.

Results

Since the project was completed Alcar has dramatically reduced downtime and enhanced maintenance. Alcar can now analyze sensor data, identify trends, predict failures, and take action. They collect data, appropriately structure the data, and provide users with relevant insights and information for their respective roles. With fully integrated supply chain, IoT and ERP applications, the company automatically sends data to corporate headquarters to manage financials, view invoices in real-time, and also generates EDI messages dispatched to customer logistic and accounting teams.

In this session, we will learn how Alcar’s project led to the simplification of systems architecture and the planning and order management processes. These processes now automatically create sales orders for 80% of deliveries, reduce cost of ownership of planning and order management processes by 35%, as well as adding the capability to detect and anlayze machine incidents 55% faster than before.
